Shopify Agentic Storefronts explained
Your Shopify store is probably already selling inside ChatGPT. You did not turn it on. Shopify did, in March 2026, for every eligible store. So the question is not whether to switch on Agentic Storefronts. It is whether, now that a shopper can ask ChatGPT for the best waterproof jacket under £150, your jacket is the one that gets named.
This page explains what Agentic Storefronts does, what it does not do, and the one thing that decides which products the agent picks.
What it is
Agentic Storefronts is a native Shopify sales channel. It takes your product data, structures it through Shopify Catalog, and syndicates it to the AI platforms that let people shop in a chat. As of September 2026 that means ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and the Shop app.1
The shopper asks a question. The agent searches the Catalog and the open web. It names two to five products with live prices and stock. The shopper buys, either inside the chat or by clicking through to your store, depending on the channel. The order lands in your Shopify admin with the AI channel attributed.2
There is no app, no feed to maintain and no commission on the sale. You pay normal payment processing.
What is on by default
Shopify made it opt out. Eligible stores went live automatically from late March 2026. It got its own page in the admin in May 2026, at Sales channels, then Agentic.3 Open it and you will see each AI channel with a status of active or inactive, a performance view, the queries you appear for and a set of recommendations to improve your product data.
Three things make a store eligible.
- You agree to the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms, per channel.
- Your store policies are complete: shipping, returns, privacy.
- Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, which in practice means a brand and a GTIN on each one.
Password protected and development stores are excluded. Everything from the Starter plan up is in.

Does it move revenue?
Shopify says it processed over $1 billion in AI influenced sales in 2025, and that AI referred orders grew 15 times between January 2025 and the Winter ‘26 Edition.4 On the Q2 2026 earnings call, Harley Finkelstein said AI referred orders to Shopify stores had tripled year on year, with 75% of those purchases outside the top 100 categories.
Store level numbers are smaller but the shape is clear. One UK Shopify store shared its dashboard in August 2026: £102,870 from 2,953 agentic checkout sessions in 30 days, with AI referred sessions up 30% and then 63% month on month.5 The same store’s GA4 showed the AI Assistant channel converting at 2.40% against 1.01% for organic search.
So the volume is early and the conversion rate is not. That is the case for getting the data right before the volume arrives.
What Agentic Storefronts does not do
It puts your products on the shelf. It does not decide which product the agent picks off the shelf.
The agent picks by comparing facts against the question. Shopify Catalog extracts those facts from your product fields: title, description, options, metafields, category. Then the agent cross checks them against your product page, your schema and every other place it has seen the product. If your description says “premium waterproof fabric” and the shopper asked for “10,000mm hydrostatic head”, you are not in the answer. If your Catalog says one price and your page says another, the agent hedges.
Shopify’s own admin recommendations say the same thing in plainer words: fill every field with extractable facts. Which is right. But it leaves the work with you, product by product, and the work does not stay done. Catalogues change and answers drift.
Being listed versus being named
Here is the same jacket, twice.
What most stores have
The Ridgeline Shell is our most advanced jacket yet. Built for the mountains and refined for the city, it delivers uncompromising protection in a sleek silhouette.
What the agent needs
Ridgeline Shell is a 3 layer waterproof jacket for hiking and cycling.Waterproof: 20,000mm hydrostatic head, taped seamsBreathability: 20,000g/m2/24hrWeight: 340g (size M)Price: £149 inc. VAT, free UK deliverySizes: XS to XXL, in stockBest for: wet weather hiking, commuting by bikeCompare: lighter than the Torrentshell, cheaper than the Beta ARThe first version is on the shelf. The second gets named for “best waterproof jacket under £150 for cycling”. Both can live on the same page. The first for the shopper, the second for the agent.
How to get chosen
- Confirm it is on. Sales channels, then Agentic. Check each channel’s status. Complete your policies. Add brand and GTIN to every product that lacks them.
- Fix the facts on your top 50 products. Plain statement of what it is and who it is for. Every measurable spec as a number with a unit. Price, stock and sizes in text as well as in the widget.
- Make every surface agree. Product page, Product JSON-LD, the Shopify fields Catalog reads, and your marketplace listings. One price. One material. One weight.
- Give the agents a front door. llms.txt at the root. A grounding file per product.
- Watch the queries. The Agentic admin page shows which questions you appear for. Ask ChatGPT the same ten buying questions monthly and record who gets named.
- Re-check after every catalogue change. New season, new prices, new variants. The answers drift within days.
Geoffy does steps two to six for Shopify stores automatically. It builds the machine readable layer for every in stock product, keeps page, widget and structured data in step when the catalogue changes, asks the engines the real questions and corrects what drifts. Questions people ask
Is Agentic Storefronts free?
Yes. No app, no listing fee, no commission. You pay standard payment processing on the sale.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It is a native sales channel, not an app. The optional Knowledge Base app lets you give the agents extra context about your store and policies.
Can I turn off one channel and keep the others?
Yes. Each channel has its own toggle and its own supplemental terms.
Does Agentic Storefronts replace SEO?
No. Agents still read your product pages and the open web. Good SEO keeps you in the results they read. Agentic Storefronts adds the Catalog feed and the checkout.
What is the difference between Agentic Storefronts and GEO?
Agentic Storefronts is the pipe from Shopify to the AI platforms. GEO is the work of making your product data coherent enough that the agent picks you once it has read it. You need the pipe. The pipe does not do the work.
Is my store already on it?
If it is a live Shopify store on any paid plan with complete policies and Catalog eligible products, probably yes. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and look.
