GEO vs SEO: what changes when the reader is a machine
SEO gets your page ranked. GEO gets your product named in the answer. Both matter. But the second one now decides who gets the sale, and most product pages were never built for it.
The one difference that matters
SEO optimises a page so a search engine ranks it. GEO optimises a product so an AI engine can read it, trust it and repeat it. Which sounds like the same job. It is not.
A search engine returns ten links and lets the shopper choose. An AI engine returns one answer and has already chosen. So the question moves from “can Google find my page?” to “when a shopper asks ChatGPT for the best waterproof walking boot under £150, does my product get named, with the right price and the right facts?”
That is generative engine optimisation. GEO for short. The engines are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude and the shopping agents Shopify now plugs into them.
Side by side
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of results | Get a product cited inside a generated answer |
| Unit of work | The page | The product, and the facts about it |
| What the engine reads | Titles, headings, links, page text | Structured facts, schema, plain statements it can quote |
| What the shopper sees | Ten blue links | One answer, three to five named products |
| How you win | Authority and relevance over time | Clarity and consistency, checked on every answer |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Citations, share of answers, AI referred sessions and orders |
| What goes wrong | You drop a few places | The engine describes your product wrongly, or picks a rival |
What stays the same
The engines still need to reach the page. So a crawlable site, fast pages, real product copy and correct schema all still count. If your SEO house is in order, you start GEO from a good place. If it is not, fix that first.
And the old rule holds. Thin content loses. An AI engine will not cite a product page that says nothing.
What changes
- The product is the unit, not the page. An answer names products. So every product needs its own clean set of facts: what it is, who it is for, what it costs, what it is made of, what it beats. A category page cannot carry that for 400 products.
- Facts beat prose. A search engine rewards a well written page. An AI engine rewards a fact it can lift without guessing. “Cast aluminium, 6 seats, rust proof, £1,299” gets quoted. Two paragraphs of lifestyle copy get skipped.
- Consistency is a ranking factor. If your product page says one price, your schema says another and a reseller says a third, the engine either hedges or drops you. Coherence across every surface is the new authority.
- Answers drift. Google ranks are stable for weeks. AI answers change with every model update and every new source. So GEO is not a one off fix. You have to check the answers and correct the drift. This is the part most tools miss.
- The buyer is often an agent. Shopify’s agentic storefronts let ChatGPT complete the purchase inside the chat. So the answer is not a click away from a sale. The answer is the sale.
What this means for a product page
You do not need new data. You need the same data in a shape a machine can use. Here is the same garden furniture set, before and after.
Before: written for a person
Our June six seater set brings a touch of Mediterranean elegance to any garden. Crafted with care from premium materials and finished in a timeless shade, it is the perfect setting for long summer evenings with family and friends.
After: the same facts, readable by an engine
June 6 Seater Garden SetMaterial: cast aluminium, powder coatedSeats: 6Weather: rust proof, stays outside all yearColour: slate greyPrice: £1,299 (inc. VAT, free UK delivery)Best for: gardens that need furniture left out in winterCompare: lighter than wrought iron, longer lasting than rattanThe second version is not better writing. It is the same product, stated so that ChatGPT can answer “which garden set can I leave out all winter?” and name it. Both versions can live on the page. The first for the shopper, the second for the engine.1
Does GEO actually move revenue?
- 3x: AI referred orders to Shopify stores, year on year.2
- 2.40%: AI Assistant channel conversion rate, versus 1.01% for organic search, one UK Shopify store, 90 days.3
- 1% to 5%: share of referral traffic from LLMs on a Geoffy customer site, three weeks after go live.
The volumes are still small for most stores. But the sessions convert at two to three times the rate of Google, and the baskets are bigger. So the maths favours starting early, before the volume arrives.
How to start
- Measure the baseline. Turn on the AI Assistant channel in GA4. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity ten real buying questions in your category. Write down who gets named. That is day zero.
- Fix the facts. For your top 50 products, make sure the page, the schema and the feed all agree on price, stock, material and use case. Add the plain statement block above.
- Publish for machines. Product JSON-LD on every page. An llms.txt at the root. A grounding file per product if you can.
- Check the answers monthly. Ask the same ten questions again. Fix what drifted. Repeat.

Questions people ask
Do I need GEO if my SEO is already good?
Yes. Good SEO gets the engine to your page. It does not make the engine confident enough to name your product in an answer. The two jobs need different signals.
Is GEO just schema markup?
No. Schema is one input. GEO also covers the plain text facts on the page, consistency across your feed and resellers, the files engines read at your domain root, and checking the answers over time.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and GEO describe the same work from two angles. AEO started with featured snippets and voice search. GEO is the term the AI engine crowd uses. Treat them as one thing.
How long until it works?
Product facts show up in answers within days of the engines re-crawling. Share of answers builds over one to three months. Measure from day zero or you will not see it.
Can I do this without a tool?
For 20 products, yes, by hand. For 500, no. The checking step is the one that breaks. Answers change weekly and nobody re-asks 500 questions by hand.
